Find out why you should swim with the largest fish in the world!
If you are planning a TravelSmart VIP getaway to Royalton Riviera Cancun or Hideaway at Royalton Riviera Cancun in the next few months, swimming with the Whale Sharks should most definitely be on your list of Must-Do activities during your stay.
Still not sure? We’re sure these 5 reasons will convince you! Can you think of any other reasons why Swimming with the whale sharks is a Must-Do experience? Let us know in the comments below…
#1. It’s the ultimate bucket-list experience
How many people can truly say they’ve been swimming with the largest fish in the world? This is so much more than a whale watching tour. You can get up close and personal with a real-life whale shark. On average, these majestic creatures measure from 18 to 32.8 ft.
Fun Fact: The largest whale shark ever measured was 40 feet long
#2. It’s completely safe
Although whale sharks are huge, they are extremely docile. Given their size they could choose to eat pretty much whatever they want but fortunately for us, they are filter feeders so their diet of choice is made up of plankton and small fish. You can safely swim alongside these gentle giants with no need to worry.
#3. No special skills required
When swimming with Whale Sharks, snorkelling is the preferred way of underwater breathing. As ocean swimming can be complicated, life jackets are mandatory for those feeling less confident and for those who are more advanced in ocean swimming and snorkelling the option to use a full body wetsuit may be given instead.
#4. It’s only available in a handful of places all over the world!
Given the Whale Sharks’ preference for warmer water and that they can cover hundreds of miles when travelling there are only a handful of places that you can actually swim with them and it is also restricted to certain seasons throughout the year. In the Mexican Caribbean, the whale shark season is from June through September with the peak months being July and August. One of the best places is Isla Holbox which is first on the list of places to swim with whale sharks by Lonely Planet. Holbox is a small island located to the north-west of Cancun, just 25 minutes off of the mainland.
#5. Whale Sharks are not the only living creatures you will encounter
During the boat ride to the whale shark area, you can expect to see a whole range of local wildlife, this can include wild dolphins, sea turtles and even manta rays, as well as a huge variety of bird life including flamingos and pelicans. Paradise for any nature lovers out there!
