The Festival of Life and Death is an annual traditional at Xcaret Park that aims its efforts to preserve the ancestral Mexican traditions of the Day of the Dead, plus sharing the Mexican culture with the world through costumes and different contemporary artistic expressions.
Each year the Festival of Life and Death Traditions welcomes a different Mexican state to be part of this grand event and in this 14th edition, the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí is the guest of honour. You can enjoy the costumes and traditions of this remarkable Mexican state and the special festivity of Xantolo from the Huasteca area.
No Day of the Dead celebration is complete without food and the Xcaret culinary demonstration for the Festival of Life and Death Traditions 2019 will have traditional dishes from San Luis Potosi on offer. Taste the delicious enchiladas potosinas, the tuna cheese (a sweet similar to jelly) or the Asado de Boda. From the Huasteca region, the essential dish is Zacahuil. This enormous tamale can be up to 15 ft long and is made from a selection of peppers, meat, and spices.
On the final two days of this 14th edition of the Festival of Life and Death Traditions, Xcaret park will welcome Los Ángeles Azules as the special guest performance. This cumbia ensemble with over three decades of success will be playing two gala concerts on the best stage of the Riviera Maya: the Gran Tlachco Theatre. Dance to their catchy rhythms as you enjoy some of their greatest hits that are not only a part of the Mexican culture but also popular in several Latin American countries and the United States, as well.
The Festival of Life and Death Traditions at Xcaret is full of colour, music, and tradition and over the past 14 years has not only earned the reputation of being an important event for those visiting Cancun and the Riviera Maya, it consistently ensures the active participation of society, Mayan communities, and artists to incorporate the diversity and cultural richness into the Day of the Dead celebration, by recapturing ethnic, traditional and contemporary practices around this millennial and beautiful Mexican tradition.
