Mexican eco-park, Xcaret has once again reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the Caribbean Pink Flamingo
Xcaret Park has spent 25 years developing breeding programs and helping with the conservation of different species, including the Caribbean Pink Flamingo.
Did you know?
The Flamingo is one of the largest, most colourful, and beautiful birds that exist not only in southeastern Mexico but around the world (Phoenicopterus Ruber Ruber). Its characteristic plumage that ranges from pink to red and crimson to scarlet is thanks to a carotenoid pigment present in many of the elements of its diet such as shrimp, plankton, algae, and crustaceans. This pigment is developed in the liver of flamenco and then dispersed into the feathers, beak, and legs.
The breeding program
In 2003 Xcaret park began a specific breeding program with the Caribbean Pink Flamingos, starting with 60 feathered couples. In 2004, 10 Caribbean Pink Flamingo chicks were born! Now, 13 years later, following the amazing work of the biologists, veterinarians and employees of the Xcaret Park, the breeding program has successfully achieved the birth of more than 130 flamingos!
Fun Flamingo Fact
Flamingos can grow to between 44 and 48 inches in height and can weigh two to three kilograms. They are recognized immediately by their long legs, relatively short body, and distinctive curved beak.
Mexican Flamingos
They live in the Yucatan Peninsula and are found in areas covered by coastal dune vegetation and separated from the mainland by sandbars. This coast is considered to be the only place on the mainland of the American continent which has a continual and uninterrupted permanent nesting of Flamingos.
